Last week I relocated one of my custom “take one” boxes to the corner of 39th and Bell street in front of Prosperos book store. Inside the box you’ll find a mini zine, stickers, paper toys or any other free goodies i stash within. I hope to switch up the content every month but we’ll see how this experiment works. Haha.

At first glance of this glittery explosion of shapes and forms with water color drips, this looks like a girl’s tribute to a messed up sports or fashion fanatic. I wasn’t sure what to make of it exactly. I liked the use of paint on the wall and the triangle shapes growing out of the wall. But I wasn’t quite getting the apocalypse theme Leslie was telling me about.

When Leslie gave her artist talk on Saturday it all came together for me. Her interpretation of the apocalypse was through the eyes of people who don’t worship a heavenly being, but rather their earthly sports stars and fashion icons. This was pretty genius, I had never thought of that!

She depicts these “gods” in a state of disarray and dismay as if the end times caught them in the acts they are over paid to perform.

The one on the left was made for a show i did in Milwaukee last year and the one on the right was made for the Hip-Hop is Undead show from last November.

Miguel was inspired to title the show Plenty of Action, no Control, from a classic 50s era cartoon drawing a kid doing a bike stunt with no hands. It was kinda like a warning illustration you might find as a PSA somewhere trying to educate youth on self control. The show consists of pieces that reflect the ideas of social, monetary and ethnic control along with city life action. Miguel did all the 3D work and I handled all the prints and video piece. The true collaboration came in on the painting of the space. Instead of having the pieces floating on a blank clean wall we decided to give each piece some context behind the work. I designed the hands behind the cyclops trio, the camo pattern behind the sacred heart and the shards floating behind my 3 large canvas prints. The corner mural where the Sucka Fish hangs we worked on together. All in all i am pleased with the way the show came together. It was a long time coming and i couldn’t have done it alone but I’m glad to have had the opportunity to put this exhibit together.

I owe some serious props to everyone who could make it out to the opening but i would like send a special shout out to some folks who put in some extra work.

I was given a green light to do whatever I wanted as long as I used the Digital Milk logo and blue coloring.
I started piecing together elements from older designs and after some sketches to get the layout where i wanted it. I ended up with these two story panels.
I initially thought these might be way too silly and over the top, but it turns out this is just what they needed. A little bit of vector madness with a slight narrative that you can adlib on the details if u wanted to find meaning in these prints.

I printed these banners out on a type of fiber paper that is lighter than a canvas but still has a great feel to it and won’t crinkle up like normal large format paper. Each piece was 4 x 8 ft big and we attached them to the poster board frame with adhesive velcro. (just in case the art needed to be replaced)

Of course intern Kdub is tired of installing. Get that girl some ice coffee! haha
